Aspen’s Scott Smith Explains Some of the EFD1000 Pro’s Capabilities
At the 2010 Heli-Expo, Aspen Avionics announced the STC certification authorizing installation of its EFD1000 flight display system in Bell 206 and 407 panels. Aspen developed the newly designated EFD1000H, featuring helicopter-specific software, in conjunction with Keystone Helicopter, calling the EFD1000H “the lowest priced certified EFIS in the helicopter market.”
Specifically designed with a vibration-isolating kit, the compact EFD1000H PFD and multifunction display (MFD) configurations feature modular architecture for full redundancy. The EFD1000H unit’s relatively small design allows for a simple and less costly installation; estimates for the total unit installation (including the PFD and MFD) are less than $27,000. Currently, Aspen is negotiating for approximately 50 such installations, most for public use on UH-1s, Bell 205s, and MD500s.
The EFD1000H is built on the foundation of Aspen’s revolutionary EFD1000 Pro. Though the entire package (including dual displays) weighs less than 10 pounds, the EFD1000 Pro provides a vast array of avionics capabilities; the unit features a solid-state attitude heading reference system (AHRS), altitude pre-select and altitude alerting, indicated and true airspeed readouts, and track deviation indication among other capabilities. Aero-TV sat down with Aspen’s Scott Smith to get a closer look at some of the EFD1000 Pro’s most prominent features. In the first of his series, Smith explains the EFD1000 Pro’s Auto-Zoom capability.

The Mosquito XE/XEL is powered by a 60HP Compact Radial Engines MZ202, a 2 cylinder, 2 stroke powerplant that has been used for a number of years on various iterations of the Mosquito design. The XE is equippd with skids while the XEL configuration is equipped with floats and reportedly requires 250-300 to build. It may also be bought fully assembled and operated as an 'ultralight' rotorcraft. The 312 pound Mosquito XEL has a gross weight of 610 pounds and a fuel burn of 4.5 gph and a fuel capacity of 5 gallons (due to ultralight regs, though the Experimental version can carry 12 gallons). 'Ultralight' range is 60 miles and HIGE is 8000 feet and HOGE is 6500' with a top speed (Exp) of 80 mph.
